Find the nearest and best directions to New York City subway and NJ Path stations on your Android phone.

Way to go! Wayfinder, NYC's augmented reality app, is designed to help you locate the subway and PATH stations nearest you. Here's how it works...

Step 1: Start up the app, then hold your phone as if you are taking a photo in landscape/horizontal mode.

Step 2: You will see a live view of the nearest subway and PATH stations in the direction you are holding your phone. Pan left or right to see more stations. Pan up to see stacked stations farther away.

Step 3: Point your phone to the ground to see a map of your current position or a list of closest stations.

Step 4: Click a station to get walking directions and view the walking directions in the map.

It is that easy!

Best Overall Application - Second Prize Taxihack

Randy M., Brooklyn, NY Permalink Submitted November 17, 2009 Data Set(s) used: Current Medallion Drivers & Current Medallions

Taxihack allows users to post live comments on NYC taxis and their drivers via email ([email protected]) or Twitter (@taxihack). Users send messages to the system, including either the medallion number (like 1A23) or the driver's number (located on the driver's id visible in the backseat).

Taxihack allows users to post live comments on NYC taxis and their drivers via email ([email protected]) or Twitter (@taxihack). Users send messages to the system, including either the medallion number (like 1A23) or the driver's number (located on the driver's id visible in the backseat). The site then posts the comment on the appropriate pages for public viewing, and sends a message back with the URL.

The site also exposes a information about the taxi industry that has previously been opaque. For instance:

  • Taxi company information : We show all the medallions owned by a company. Also, we scrape the NYS corporation search results for more info, including the address.
  • Possible drivers for a cab & possible cabs for a driver: This comes from a PDF located on the nyc.gov TLC site.
As the user comments on taxis, we save each one that could serve as a record of the cab rides they've taken. If the user comments via Twitter, the profile page uses info from their Twitter profile. If they contribute via email, we take a more low-key approach, just identifying them by an anonymous ID.
