MTA BusTime represents a big step forward in how the MTA delivers technology to its customers. at At the 2011 Summer NYPTA Conference, MTA’s Sunil Nair discussed MTA’s new pilot project - Bus Time, currently in operation on the B63 route in Brooklyn. The program uses Global Positioning System (GPS) hardware and wireless communications technology to track the real-time location of buses. Sunil will explain how the MTA developed the system, which allows riders to find the real-time location of buses that will arrive at their stop, and is accessible via a desktop web map, a mobile web site on iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, or other smartphones, and via SMS on all mobile phones.

Today, we are excited to launch a new project: real-time bus locations for the B63 line in Brooklyn. For the past several months, we’ve been working closely with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to build the open source and open data infrastructure for this new service. As open source software developers, as open data advocates, and as MetroCard-carrying members of the NYC tech community, we at OpenPlans are extremely proud to help New Yorkers answer the question: “where’s the bus?”
As of this morning, you can log on tohttp://bustime.mta.info from your computer or smartphone and see B63s moving along their routes. You’ll also be able to retrieve real-time bus information from any phone via SMS — MTA will be installing informational signs with SMS codes along the B63 route in coming weeks.

MTA BusTime Offers Real-Time Bus Location Information for B63 Customers
"Today, the transit system is quickly catching up with our 21st century expectation that real-time information is available on the go for all New Yorkers," said MTA Chairman Jay H. Walder. "That means knowing if your bus is on time before you leave home, getting updates on delays while you're out and about, and unlocking opportunities for better service across our entire network. MTA Bus Time is a big part of this new vision for bus service in New York."
